Pokemon Stadiums are where official Gym battles and Elite 4 matches are held in the Pokemon world. The Pokemon Stadiums represented in the Smash Bros. Series are thought by some to be based more on those that appear in the league matches from the anime, due to their shapeshifting between the various types. Not counting the normal type, 8 types have been represented so far in the Smash Bros. games.

Pokemon Stadium III is very similar in appearance to it's two previous incarnations. Very little has changed since Pokemon Stadium 2, only small minor details have been added in order to give it a more modern appearance. The stage cycles through it's 5 different types, Normal, Bug, Dragon, Dark and Steel. The stage will always start on the Normal type version and every 30 seconds switches to another type. The stage reverts back to Normal in between every type change. For example, the stage starts as Normal, 30 seconds later becomes Dark, 30 seconds later goes back to Normal and finally 30 seconds later goes to Dragon. With the exception of returning to the Normal stage every other stage change, the order the changes occur in is randomly determined. Normal – This is the basic appearance of the Pokemon Stadium. It has it's green flooring and two floating platforms on the left and right. The biggest change that has occurred is that there is now a 3rd floating platform twice as high up in the air as the other two, but located in the middle of the stage. Bug – Tall grass covers the stadium that rustles when you move through it. The grass is about as tall as Fox and can help to conceal your character if they are shorter than that. The parts of your character that is hidden in the grass is difficult to see, but there is still a large enough portion showing that you can tell where you are if you are completely submerged, like Jigglypuff for example. On this stage you can see the Pokemon, Yanma, Ledian and Ninjask flying about. You may also see Weedle, Caterpie and Wurmple crawling amongst the tall grass. Dragon – Large mountain outcroppings cover the stage. The mountains range in height from a single Ganondorf to three. These mountains are bluish-gray in color. Items tend to roll down the slopes of the mountains and rest in the valleys. On this stage the Pokemon Altaria, Flygon and Garchomp will fly about in the background of the stage and will occasionally land on the various mountain peaks. When on the peak, they will act as a platform you can traverse, but be wary of when they begin to fly again for they take off into the air quickly, and could knock you off the stage doing so, similar to how the Arwings can knock you off the stage in the Corneria level. Dark – The stage darkens, giving it the impression that it is late at night. A large, full moon appears in the background, shining light down on the left side of the stage. A black, metal, spiked courtyard fence is just beyond the characters with the gate in the center. On the gate is a sign saying “Keep Out.” At times you can see Murkrow flying down onto one of the spikes of the fence. At times Umbreon may also walk onto the stage from the side with it's yellow markings pulsating. Steel – A large cinderblock approximately half the size of Fox's Landmaster lies in the middle of the stage. On the left and right of the stage are two floating platforms made of steel girders. If the cinderblock is hit for enough damage, it will crumble and fall apart, similar to the walls on Shadow Moses Island. There are two much smaller cinderblocks about the size of Kirby on either side of the large cinderblock. These cinderblocks cannot be destroyed. You also see a Steelix that will have it's head up above the cinderblock watchin the battle, waving it's head around. When the cinderblock is destroyed, you can see the Steelix's entire body. While the cinderblock is still up, you may see a Mawile peek it's head out from one of the sides of the Cinderblock.
