Subcon is the setting of the game Super Mario Bros. 2. Subcon was once a peaceful place, until it was taken over by the tyrannical frog Wart. Wart captured and enslaved the Subcon fairies, the protectors of the realm and imprisoned them so that they would not interfere with his evil plans. Inside their confinement, the Subcons sent a message to the hero of the near-by Mushroom Kingdom, Mario, to come and deliver them from the dictator. At first Mario thinks the message is just a dream, but the next day, while on a picnic with Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad he discovers a cave that leads him to the very world he saw in his dream.
Mario and his friends instantly set out to free the fairies. They battled their way through Wart's army, the 8-Bit Club, and his generals: Mouser, Clawgrip, Fry Guy, and Tryclyde. In the end they faced the evil king himself, and was eventually able to defeat him and free the captive fairies. They then returned to the Mushroom Kingdom. The end of the game shows Mario waking up, implying that the entire events of Super Mario Bros. 2 never actually happened. This would mean that Subcon actually does not exist. However, this is just speculation.

Layout
|
The stage has no lower KO border, and the ground stretches out far as the stage can show. The ground is fresh and grassy, and small tufts of grass wave in the breeze of the stage. Occasionally, a cherry appears in the middle of the stage, shaking back and forth. A large hill is on the right of the stage, and can be walked through, but the tops of the hills can be stood on, like fall-through platforms. Also, a small palm tree resides atop the hill. Another part of the hill has another smaller hill going upwards. The background of the stage shows many hills, a large mess of bushes, and large trees sticking out of the dense forest/jungle. If you pause and look around, you can see the rest of level 1-1 from Super Mario Bros. 2.

Hazards

|
Hazard #1:
|
Enemies |
Enemies from World 1-1 will occasionly try to make things worse for players while they are fighting. There are Shy Guys, who will simply march onto the stage and make pathetic attempts to walk into the players. Shy Guys can be easily defeated, and they do not appear if someone is playing as Shy Guy. Next, there are Tweeters. Tweeters are like Shy Guys, but they hop instead of walk, they do more damage, but they die even quicker than Shy Guys. Giant Shy Guys appear too, but they can help more than harm, as jumping on them causes them to bounce you up like the Spring item from Brawl. Also, the Snifits that are off screen will fire bullets at you, so watch out.

Hazard #2:
|
Cherries |
Every once and a while, a Cherry will appear in the center of the stage and float there, waiting for someone to touch it. Whenever a Cherry is touched, a number floats above that players head for a second. When the number gets to three, the player who grabbed Cherry number 3 will become invincible, as if they grabbed a Starman.

Hazard #3:
|
Grass |
The tufts of grass on the stage can be pulled up by using the Down Special over one of them. Depending on the strength of the character, they will pull up the object quicker. The objects are usually Vegetables, which can be chucked at other players to do some minor; ranging to medium, damage. Mushrooms can restore your health, and Subcon Potions can cause the stage to turn 8-bit, possibly being a distraction.
