City Trial

City Trial is one of the three game modes in the game Kirby Air Ride. It involves a group of two to four Kirbies riding their Air Ride Machines through an immense city, gathering various power-ups called Patches and better Air Ride Machines for a competition in a Stadium event. The city is divided up into various sectors, each connected by a series of rails that can be ridden for quick transport between them. After a certain amount of time is spent exploring the city, a Stadium match begins, where the players can put their new, upgraded machines up against the other players in one of several different challenges. All players begin on a Compact Star, an Air Machine exclusive to this game mode with lackluster stats. However, strewn about the city are Air Machines of every type that the players can find and ride. An important note is that when getting on a new machine, if a Player has collected more than 20 power-ups, the Machine will drop them until it has 20 (these can then be picked back up, though).

Layout
The stage begins on a large blue rectangular building. To the left of this Final Destination-sized building, there is another building with a fall-through roof and another platform underneath that. That area of the left building has a quality much like Luigi’s Mansion, in that when someone drops down or enters the building on the left, it shows the inside of the building. In this building, there is a Question Mark Pad, a large hologram of a question mark floating over a purple pad that is adorned with question marks. Touch it, and a random common item will appear, if items are on. After about a minute of fighting here, a large cloud with little yellow stars in it floats up from the bottom of the screen, carrying everyone to the next area of the stage. The next area, in this case, would be the Fiery Volcano.

The Fiery Volcano has much more room than Final Destination. Try flattening the Temple stage, and that’s kind of like how large it is. The first section of Fiery Volcano is an area made of red rocks. The size of it is about twice as big as one of the side platforms on Melee’s Dream Land stage. There is also a large rock in the middle, but this rock has a hole in the top, so jump on, and you’ll fall through and get KO’d. The bridge is the longest part, being a little bigger than Final Destination. Be careful about where you jump on this area, because right in the middle of the bridge, two flaming dragons jump back and forth, roasting players who jump too high, or get knocked high into the air. And finally, we come to the volcano, which has two slanted patches of ground that you can stand on, and burning lava in the middle. Touch the lava, and it has a similar effect to lava from the Norfair stage from Brawl. Again, another minute of fighting here and the cloud, once again, swoops in to take everyone to the next area, the Grassy Plains.

The Grassy Plains is a simple and smaller fighting area. On the very left of the fighting area, there is a canal that will sweep away any players who jump in to it. The stage is also littered with tree platforms that are fall-through. Attack the platforms themselves, and they’ll break, and never come back for the rest of the match. Also, slightly to the right of the stage is Whispy Woods; however he’s only twice as big as Bowser. He can be struck to KO him temporarily. His roots will occasionally come up from the ground and attempt to damage players. And to the far right is a small wall that is about the size of two Bowsers. And once again, the cloud will come to pick everyone up and take them to the next area, Electric Hotel.

The Electric Hotel is a simple fighting area. There are four floors to it, and the entirety of the stage is about as tall as two Giga Bowsers. All of the floors except for the very bottom floor are fall-through. On the bottom floor, there are two glowing pads which can launch players to the next floor, and then on each subsequent floor, there’s only one pad. On all of the above ground floors, a Kirby-sized patch of land right next to the edge is a boost pad, which will shoot you off of the floor and right down to the ground in front of the stage. Also, except for the first floor, each floor has a hole in it. On the second floor, there is a large sign, and it hangs over a bit, so that there is some slanted ground that you can stand on from the back of sign. The stage is a lot taller than it is wider, so take caution. After a minute of fighting here, the cloud dives in once more and takes you to the Sea Harbor.

The Sea Harbor is a small arena, and the platform you fight on is about the size of Dream Land’s main platform. Also, there is a fall-through platform in the form of another one of those signs that has the words “Sea Harbor” on it. This fall-through platform is only a bit smaller than the actual platform. To the sides of the main platform, the water has a unique quality to it. It takes pulls you quickly to the KO border, due to the whirlpools on the sides of the stage. Again, another minute here, and the cloud comes to take you to the Castle Court, the final area.

The Castle Court is another simple stage setup. It is mostly flat until the very edge of the stage, which has very steep slopes. You cannot KO from the sky, nor from the ground, you must knock players out of the doors of the castle. Also, the sign that says “Castle Court” on it acts as an extra fall-through platform which is ˝ the size of the real stage. After a minute of fighting here, the cloud goes back to the building area once more.
Hazards
Hazard #1: Events Many different Events can happen on this stage. Sometimes, the peaceful blue sky will turn a dark red, and meteors will rain from the sky. In the background, you can see other areas get hit with meteors from time to time, but eventually you’ll be hit. When the meteor strikes, a massive explosion similar to the Banzai Bills from Princess Peach’s Castle occurs. It’s just as deadly as that as well, so be careful. Air Rides from the original game can sometimes fly by in an attempt to hit a player, and they can have all kinds of generic character cameos riding them, from Goombas to Imps from Okami. Really almost any generic character could pop up. Nevertheless, get hit by an Air Ride machine, and you’ll take a nasty 10% damage. A UFO can appear on the stage as well, making things darker and harder to see for a short amount of time. It’ll pass and fly away, leaving a plethora of items. Sometimes the items on the stage will begin to bounce as if they were made of rubber, making them hard to get. Rarely, players will begin glowing rainbow colors and will move twice as fast as usual, giving slow characters an advantage, but speedy characters like Sonic will have a bit of a hard time. T.A.C. can also appear on the stage, and if you beat him up, you’ll get items, but after a while, he’ll jump high into the sky. On the Sea Harbor and Castle Court areas, the fall-through platform sign can also set on fire, giving an Entei-like effect to anyone caught in the blaze. Fog can also cover the stage, once again obscuring view and making some moves randomly miss. Also, items on the stage can become fake, making them do damage when picked up. On the Electric Hotel area, a light may shine down that restores 2% every two seconds that you stand in it. Sometimes, an odd springy sound effect will play, and all of the items will change to the same item. All of these wacky events will occur randomly, and rarely, so for the most part, you can fight uninterrupted.
