Paint Roller
Updated - September 02, 2011

Paint Roller is one of the recurring boss characters in the Kirby series. He (?) is a character who has been displayed as having a very intense artistic talent, and is quite speedy in his motions, thanks to the rollerskates he wears on his feet. He first fought against Kirby in the NES title, Kirby’s Adventure, where he would paint a myriad of the enemies that Kirby had already fought as drawings that magically came to life and attacked the little pink puffball. Paint Roller constantly carries a paintbrush around (though it is often mistaken for a marker or pencil). Later Kirby series characters, Ado, Drawcia, and Adeleine, have similar powers over paint-base enemies, as well as paint itself. Some of the drawings that Paint Roller draws are able to be inhaled by Kirby, granting him their powers as they would if they were real enemies. As a speedy little fella, Paint Roller should not be taken lightly!

    Works:
Kirby's Adventure (Nintendo)
Kirby's Avalanche (Super Nintendo)
Kirby: Canvas Curse (Nintendo DS)

General Information
Offense: 4/10 Origin: Kirby's Adventure
Defense: 3/10 Release Date: December 28, 1992
Projectile: 7/10 Home Stage: Ice Cream Island
Weight: 4/10 Taunt Up: Paint Roller sets up an easel, which is facing away from the audience. He sketches something invisible briefly, while looking around to see if anyone was watching. He then swings the easel behind him, and it disappears. If a character is hit by the easel, they are dealt a slight 4% damage, and a little bit of knockback.
Speed: 9/10 Taunt Down: Paint Roller writes the words “Rock On!” onto the ground of the stage. He then skates back and forth rapidly over top of it, effectively erasing the words.
Recovery: 6/10 Taunt Side: Paint Roller skates once around in a circle, and then says, “Let me paint you a lovely portrait… Of you losing to me!” while posing for the camera with a wink and waving his signature ‘Rock On!’ sign in the air.
Throwing Ability: 2/10 Entrance: Painting ahead of him with his paintbrush thrust forward, Paint Roller skates on the rainbow from the foreground (a la Kirby: Canvas Curse), before doing a quick circle to face the foreground himself. The rainbow disappears as he waves his signature ‘Rock On!’ sign to the camera.
Final Smash: 5/10 Kirby Hat: Kirby acquires a painter’s smock, and Paint Roller’s hat itself. He gains the rollerskates, (which do not change Kirby’s speed; however they will change Kirby’s running animation). The pink puffball will also acquire Paint Roller’s white gloves.

Standard Special: Enemy Portrait
(Varies)
Upon pressing the special button, Paint Roller whips out an easel from behind him in similar fashion to his Up Taunt, which delivers a similar amount of damage and knockback (~4% and little knockback). However, instead of placing the easel away from the camera, Paint Roller places it facing the audience, allowing them to marvel at his masterpiece. Depending on the duration of time that the special button is held, Paint Roller will draw a sketch-rendition of an enemy from the Kirby series. They could be considered stepping stones, as when this move is used midair, Paint Roller can perform a footstool jump off of his creations. The drawing comes to life, flying after the nearest opponent depending on just what it is. The multiple sketch-critters which Paint Roller can create are as follows (listed from most common to the rarest):
Waddle Dee (3%)
Obviously as the most common of all of the baddies in the Kirby series, the Waddle Dee simply MUST grace the masterful Paint Roller’s easel. Upon being painted, Waddle Dee will look around, and simply bounce casually around the stage until it is swatted away by another player or a stage hazard. All in all, it acts exactly like King Dedede’s Waddle Dee Throw move from Super Smash Bros. Brawl… except without the throwing factor.
Drifter (2% per hit)
Though only slightly less annoying than the Waddle Dee, a sketch of Drifter appears on Paint Roller’s canvas. The sketch of Drifter will spin in a corkscrew (with a similar effect to Meta Knight’s Drill Rush move in Super Smash Bros. Brawl) towards an enemy, spinning around and dealing a slight 2%-per-hit slashing damage before disappearing.
Loud (9%)
The cute little raincloud from Kirby’s Dream Land 3 is drawn upon the easel of Paint Roller, only to make a very short-lived appearance afterwards. Floating above the nearest opponent (homing similarly to the Metroid assist trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl), Loud will drop a heavy rain droplet which causes the opponent to trip, and then follows up with a quick ZAP of lightning, dealing 9% electric-based damage to the opponent. The sketch of Loud then flies off the top of the screen.
Bubbles (13%)
The smiling, blue bouncy ball Bubbles appears in drawing form as Paint Roller quickly does a sketch. Bubbles bounces around off of every wall with increasing momentum, and disappears instantly upon contact with an enemy. When midair, Bubbles will meteor smash the opponent downwards with a solid 13% damage. When the sketch comes in contact with an opponent stationed on the ground, he or she will be buried in-ground Pitfall-style for 3 seconds.
Bomb (20%)
Preferring not to be flashy with this particular drawing, Paint Roller wastes no time in creating a sentient bomb that simply flies rapidly towards an opponent (and, oddly enough, through walls)! The homing bomb will plainly explode upon contact, dishing out some solid knockback and 20% explosive damage to boot!
Walky (3% per hit)
Certainly the rarest of all of Paint Roller’s renditions, Walky is a powerful appearance who appears and instantly lets out a cry of vicious soundwaves, which expand outwards to cover the range of a Smart Bomb from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It stuns the opponents similarly to Zapdos’s effect from Super Smash Bros. Melee, dishing out small increments of 3% shocking damage for a maximum of 8 hits, before knocking them skywards, if they are unfortunate enough to be caught in Walky’s range…
Side Special: Skater Smash
(~6%)
The second this move is initiated, Paint Roller skates powerfully forward with his paintbrush outstretched powering through any opponent who is in his way and blasting them in the opposite direction with an increase in about 6% damage. During this move, Paint Roller will be drawing a singular line about the length of 4 Kirbies long before stopping. The colour of the line determines what sort of damage it will deal to an opponent who touches it. For example, a red line would deal fire-based damage with a little bit of knockback, a grey line would deal damage akin to the Fan item, a yellow line would deal electric damage, etc. The move itself is similar in practice to Mr. Game and Watch’s Judgment attack in the Smash Bros. series.
Up Special: Paint Panic
(3%-12%)
Paint Roller quickly paints a long, arching rainbow which can be directed by the player for as long as the special button is held. As the player directs this rainbow, however, Paint Roller begins to slide up it similarly to how Kirby himself would move in the game Kirby: Canvas Curse. Paint Roller moves faster along the rainbow if it is at a more horizontal or downwards angle, as opposed to a vertical line, or one sloping upwards. If the rainbow is directed into another player, Paint Roller will speed to that position and the special move will end with Paint Roller trampling the other player with a footstool-jumping, meteor-smashing stomp on the head with his rollerskate-clad feet, dealing (of course) heavy knockback, and a powerful 12% damage. Should someone come in contact with Paint Roller along his course, he will spin off the rainbow and be able to continue attacking as he was - a nice little bonus for those who get in the way of the eccentric ball!
Down Special: 100 Yard Hop
(1%-10%)
As the move is initiated, Paint Roller instantly crouches downwards, seemingly preparing himself for the leap he is about to perform. This move can be held for up to 5 seconds (any longer and a ‘tripping’ effect will occur), and when released, Paint Roller will fly forward… depending, of course, on how long the special move was held for. At full charge, just before the five second limit, Paint Roller will power forward with a spin attack, going the length of the Falco Phantasm move from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, at a speed just higher than Bowser’s dash of the same game. If the button is simply tapped, Paint Roller will slowly hop forward approximately the length of a single King Dedede lying down, leaving him relatively open for a charged-up smash attack! If the move is performed midair, Paint Roller will no longer require a charge of this move, and instead will perform a move similar to Zero Suit Samus’ backflip move from Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Final Smash Masterpiece!
(?%)
When the move is initiated, Paint Roller shouts, “I am not the student… I am the MASTER!” before hopping into the foreground. Instantly, all action comes to a stop as the stage is covered by a canvas with Paint Roller’s head slightly obscuring it similarly to Snake’s Grenade Launcher Final Smash. The canvas is then filled in with sketched versions of the stage and each character, exactly as they were before… except they are now being harassed by painted objects such as those appearing from Paint Roller’s standard special move flying all over the screen wildly (similarly to King Dedede’s Waddle Dee Army Final Smash). To make matters worse, Paint Roller is able to ‘erase’ portions of the stage for a brief period of time (however, he cannot erase the entire stage, just platforms) and draw his own modifications onto it in this time. Once 20 seconds of this have passed, Paint Roller’s canvas will rip apart, revealing the characters in the same position as they were on canvas. Such artistic magic will not be easy to dodge, that is for certain!
