Monty Mole
Updated - November 19, 2011

Monty Moles (also known as Gophers in the cartoons) are surly moles that have appeared in several Mario games, including a few sidescrollers such as Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. They later reappeared in Super Mario 64, Paper Mario, and other recent titles. In these games, Monty Moles are generally cowards who throw rocks at Mario and will then burrow underground before Mario can attack them.

Monty Moles are major opponents in Super Mario Sunshine. They acted as bosses in the game. Only two of them appeared in the game, both of them manned a cannon, attacking Mario with Bullet Bills and Bob-ombs. As such, Monty Moles appear to be very technologically advanced.

Attack Details
Standard Special: Rocky Wrench
(3%-6%)
Monty Mole will take out a wrench and toss it forwards as a projectile attack. These wrenches travel at a slow pace across the stage, impervious to all obstacles, travelling straight through them. Upon hitting an opponent, the wrench will collide with them before falling to the ground, causing 3%-6% damage upon impact. These wrenches can be deflected by shields and reflected by certain special move shields.
Side Special: Dirt Dash
(2%-5%)
Monty Mole will burrow into the ground and dig a tunnel forwards surprisingly quick. This attack can damage opponents for minor damage, but its main focus is burying them in the ground as a stunning action. If Monty Mole digs his way to the edge of a platform, he'll turn around and dig in the opposite direction. Digging on a thin platform will cause him to fall through.
Up Special: Dirt Drill
(3%-8%)
Monty Mole performs a quick hop into the air before corkscrewing to recover frantically, spraying harmless dirt in every direction. Attacking opponents with this move will cause multiple hits and comboes, but not much damage. This recovery attack is slightly above-average.
Down Special: Rock Ready
(4%-7%)
Monty Mole picks up a rock off the ground and will carry it over his head until he's ready to throw it. Pressing the attack button in many situations will cause him to toss the small rock. These rocks cannot be picked up by opponents, since they'll disappear shortly after touching the ground. A rock will cause between 4% and 7% damage.
Final Smash Monty's Revenge
(15%-26%)
Adapted from a Mario Party 7 mini-game, Monty Mole will call for a few friends with mallets to appear alongside him for the following 15 seconds. These extra Monty Moles will use their hammers to attack their opponents, causing generally around 15%-26% damage each whack. Monty Mole can direct his friends by closing in closer to his opponents.
