King Kaliente

King Kaliente, not to be confused with Super Mario RPG 's King Kalamari, is a boss in Super Mario Galaxy. Although his Japanese name suggests he is a Blooper, he more closely resembles an octopus than a squid. He appears on the cover of Super Mario Galaxy. He seems to be in league with Bowser as he was leading a portion of his fleet, was called upon by Bowser Jr. to fight Mario, and guarded a grand star. He is fought twice: once in the Good Egg Galaxy and again in Bowser Jr.'s Lava Reactor. The second battle is for a Grand Star.

Fight Details
King Kaliente sits in the background of the stage in a large pool of molten lava, so there is no direct way to battle him. Instead, the player(s) must smack coconuts out of the air that King Kaliente projects towards the foreground back and forth to damage the giant octopus using any method of attacking. First hits with the coconuts on King Kaliente will cause 10% damage, second shots will cause 20% and if a third hit is scored will cause 30% damage. It's not always possible to score three shots every time, since the coconut may break on the first or second hits. On Easy-Hard difficulties, King Kaliente will cycle between attacking once and shooting a coconut. On Very Hard, he'll attack twice before shooting a coconut, and on Intense he'll be constantly attacking while shooting a coconut after every three attacks.

Attacks
Attack #1:
Lava Splash (Easy-Intense) |
Every once in a while King Kaliente will splash in his pool of lava, forming a wave of molten lava that will splash across the stage from the background. This wave gets bigger on harder difficulties and must be jumped over. With good timing, the wave can also be air dodged, but not shielded. The wave will cause 10% damage on Easy to Hard and 20% on Very Hard and Intense.
Attack #2:
Triple Fireball (Easy-Intense) |
King Kaliente will shoot three fireballs towards the stage, one on the left side, one in the middle, and one on the right. Unlike in Super Mario Galaxy, these fireballs will travel vertically across the stage from the sky instead of from the background. Each fireball that hits will cause 8% damage and medium knockback. On Very Hard and Intense difficulties, these fireballs cause 12% damage.
Attack #3:
Quintuple Fireball (Very Hard-Intense) |
This attack is similar to King Kaliente's Triple Fireball attack except he spits two additional fireballs. Along with the three that fall from the sky, the other two will travel horizontally across the stage, one from the left side and the other from the right. These fireballs cause the same damage and knockback.
Attack #4:
Lava Bouncers (Medium-Intense) |
Occassionally, King Kaliente will spit out little blue Lava Bouncers that will hop along the ground towards the player(s) and attach themselves to them if they reach them. They can be easily defeated however, as they have 5% health on Medium, 10% health on Hard and Very Hard, and 15% health on Intense. If they attach to a player, they must run back and forth quickly to get free, otherwise their speed and jumping capabilities will be decreased by 50%.
Attack #5:
Tentacle Swipe (Intense) |
On Intense difficulty, King Kaliente will swipe across the stage with a large tentacle. This tentacle must be jumped over or air dodged. If smacked with his tentacle, it'll cause 35%-40% damage and high knockback. This attack can also shatter shields instantly.
