The Shadow Characters are Tabuu's creations from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, after Luigi, King Dedede, Ness and Kirby found all of the character who have turn into a trophy exepct Sonic the Hedgehog, Pokemon Trainer's Pokemon, Toon Link, Zero Suit Samus, Jigglypuff, Wolf, Wario-Man, Wario in overalls and Giga Bowser, and during that Tabuu made some shadow versions of these characters and put them in the Great Maze, and what the heroes and villians do is to defect the shadow versions of themselves and defect Tabuu, once and for all!

When a Shadow character appears, they are the same characters of which of the characters that release him/she out of the Assist Trophy and he/she will attack the opponents for 18 seconds.
